Trip highlights

Meet Enter Ethiopia representative at the airport and transfer to the hotel. After some rest drive to Debre Libanos Monastery a day tour via Sululta plain, which holds several wintering and variety of Afro tropical bird species.

The endemic Black-headed (Abyssinian) Siskin, White-billed starling, Rupell’s Black chat, Lanner Falcon, Verreaux’s and Tawny eagle, Egyptian and White backed vultures, Lammergeyer, Erick’s francolin, Rufus breasted sparrow hawk, Little and common rock Thrush, Red-collared window bird, Abyssinian wood pecker, White Backed black Tit, White Winged cliff chatt, and Brown woodland Warblers are among the species we may see. Besides, the beautiful endemic Gelada Baboon can easily be seen at the edge of Debre Libanos gorge.
Then drive back to Addis Ababa in the late afternoon.

On this day morning we drive to the Ambo Road for Menagesha State Forest. The Emperor Zera Yacob (1434-1468), noticing a degradation of the forest around Mount Wechecha initiated what was perhaps the first reforestation and conservation measure in the region by having Juniper trees planted. We will take a picnic lunch, making our way up through the forest towards the top of Mount Wechecha. We can expect to see the Abyssinian Catbird, Banded Barbet, Golden-backed Woodpecker, Black-headed Forest Oriole, Wattled Ibis, Yellow-fronted Parrot, Black-winged Lovebird, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Crowned Eagle and Narina’s Trogon. Among the wildlife species recorded here are Menelik’s Bushbuck, Leopard, Colobus Monkey, Serval, Grey Duiker, Hyaena, Warthog, Porcupine and Civet Cat. We will return to Addis by the Jimma Road, to the south of the forest.

Today we have a long drive to Lake Langano with several extended stops. Our first stop would be at a wetland near Debra Zeyit some 45 km east of Addis Ababa where many water birds can be seen. White-backed and Knob-billed Ducks, African Spoonbills, Avocets, Pintails, Grebes, and Widgeon can easily be seen. We will have a launch at Lake Ziway where there is a great variety of birds.
Lake Ziway is one of the bird paradises and one of the Ethiopian rift valley Lakes. It accommodates a great number of aquatic birds. Here, we expect to see the African Pygmy-goose, Malachite, and Pied Kingfisher, Lesser Jacana, Black Heron, different Terns, Pelican, Grey-headed and Lesser Black-backed Gull, African Fish-eagle, Black Crake, Allen’s Gallinule
Before we reach our place for the night stay we may have one short stop at the acacia Woodland for few species like the Black billed and Blackwood Hoopoes, Yellow-vented Eremomela, Grey Flycatcher, Olivaceous and buff bellied Warbles, Red-faced Crombec, wood headed Buffalos weavers and ring-necked dove.

Drive for Birding around Bishangari is the ideal place for bird watching. It is located between the ancient forest and Lake Langano. Out of the many aquatic bird species found on the lake the great white pelicans, cormorants, darters, storks, kingfishers, Egyptian geese, fish eagles and many more are expected. There are birds seen in abundance by the lake, the ancient forest is also home to starlings, hornbills, weavers, bustards and many more. Around Bishangari not less than 300 bird species have registered.

Early morning we have birding around Langano which is one of the best birding areas in Ethiopia. Langano Lake is the smallest and shallowest lake in the Ethiopian Rift Valley System. A pre breakfasts birding in the acacia woodland nearby Langano resort. To get enough time in Hawassa we may not have any special stops unless we see special things. The Heuglin’s Robin-Chat, Willow and Lesser swamp Warblers and Red-breasted Wryneck. The Woodland and Grey Kingfisher, Spotted creeper, Painted snipe, Purple Swamp Hen, Western banded Snake eagle, Giant Kingfisher, African Thrush, Senegal Thick-knee, Greenshank, Black-headed Batis, Little and Spectacled weavers, Red-shouldered Cuckoo-shrike and Beautiful sunbirds are one of the most interesting birds inhabiting Lake Hawassa and the surrounding woodlands.

The Yellow-fronted Parrot, Abyssinian woodpecker, Double-toothed Barbet, Yellow fronted thinker bird, Half collared kingfisher, Narina’s Trogon, White checked Turaco, Red-shouldered and emerald cuckoo, Yellow-bellied waxbill, Scaly francolin, Abyssinian ground Thrush, Spectacled and Grosbeak weaves, Lemon and Tambourine Doves are one the species inhabiting in Wondo genet. Ayer’s hawk Eagle, Fan-tailed, and Thick-billed Ravens, African Little sparrow hawk, Crested Eagle, African Harrier Hawk, Sharp’s starling, Broad-billed Roller, Blue-headed Coucal, Scaly and Lesser Honey Guides are Some of the excellent birds we are expecting to see in this lush forest and drive back to Hawassa.

This day after breakfast we drive to Dinsho (Park headquarter of the Bale mountains national park). In Bale, we have a chance to spot Rouget’s Rail, Abyssinian ground thrush, Abyssinian long-eared Owl, white backed black Tit and so much more.
This area is also the best place for Ethiopian endemic mammals such as endemic Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck and Bohor Reedbuck. Then continue to Bale Goba.

This day we will have a full day birding in the forests near Goba and on Sanetti plateau. Sanetti is the largest moorland tract in whole Africa and it is the home to the rare Ethiopian Wolf and the Giant mole Rats.

Abyssinian Woodpecker, Abyssinian catbird, White backed Black Tit, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Yellow crowned Canary, Somali chestnut winged starling, Olive Pigeon, Mountain Buzzard, African snipe, Thekla Lark, Malachite sunbird, Mottled and Alpine swifts, Moorland Francolin, Golden Eagle, Lanner Falcon, Watteled Crane, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Ruddy shelduck, Verreaux’s’ Eagle, Yellow bellied and common waxbills, Tropical Bouboo, Rufus breasted. Sparrow Hawk, Abyssinian Slaty Flycatcher, Black winged Lovebird, Bale Parisoma and Slender billed Starlings are among interesting birds of the Bale Mountains National Park.

The beautiful Ethiopian Wolf (endemic), Abyssinian Hare, Klipspringer, Giant Mole Rats and different species of grass rats are some of the mammals that we expect in this magnificent moorland region. Then return back to Goba for the Night stay.

Morning drive to the east towards the Awash National Park, we will be birding along the way, and will stop for lunch in Nazareth. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded in Awash. We expect to see ostrich, secretary bird, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Carmine bee-eaters, Abyssinian roller, the endemic White-tailed Swallow, Buff Crested Bustard, Dark Chanting Goshawk, Pygmy Falcon, Honey Guide, Woodland Kingfisher, Kori and Arabian Bustard, Black-shouldered Kite, White, and Crowned Rosy Patch Shrike, Orange-billed Parrot, Lilac Breasted Roller, Lappet-faced and Ruppell’s vulture.

We will also see a variety of different animals, including Greater and Lesser Kudu, Wart Hog, Dik Dik, Gerenuk, Menelik’s Bushbuck, Soemmering gazelle, and Hamadryas baboons.

Overnight Awash fall or similar standard

Drive back to Addis Ababa en route, we stop at DebreZeyit (Bishoftu) Creator Lake which is 42 km from Addis Ababa. Continue to back to Addis to enjoy farewell dinner at one of the traditional Ethiopian restaurants with live songs and dances of different ethnic groups.
